Read Empty Mansion years back and live a block away from William Clark Library. Fascinated with their lives, so when the opportunity to visit Bellosguardo came up, I jumped on it. Not only is Bellosguardo a beautiful time capsule of a bygone era, but the docents are amazing. This is my second time going and I'm in awe of the gem we have in our own Santa Barbara backyard. My brother and sister-in-law were visiting and got to enjoy Bellosguardo for the first time. We grew up in Santa Barbara County and always thought the area of Bellosguardo was an extension of the cemetery. To wonder around the estate was magical. The docents were enthusiastic, energetic, and it felt like they were hosting and wanted me to have the best time possible. The cocktails were a really nice surprise and food was perfect. I had trouble falling asleep thinking about everything I learned and saw at the estate. Everything about Bellosguardo was beautiful. It was a thrill to be there. The staff and volunteers were so welcoming and interesting to listen to as they shared the house with us. The jazz concert was a great way to get in the Christmas spirit. The appetizers were memorable. It was lovely to mingle with guests on the back patio before the concert. My recent tour of Bellosguardo was easily the best house tour/museum tour l've ever experienced. Period. The man and woman docents were pitch-perfect in the information and pacing, and they seemed genuinely pleased to be there and excited to lead our small group. I had some initial trepidation about the $100 ticket price because I thought it seemed excessive, but after the tour I actually feel like the ticket price represented an excellent value and in fact I now consider it money very well spent. We are very much looking forward to being able to visit more of the estate, especially being able to learn more about the engineering aspects of Bellosguardo by touring the basement, seeing the boiler, learning about the electrical/heating/etc. It might also be interesting to partner with local master gardeners in order to help restore the gardens further. "As a lighting/interior designer and art historian, I loved every aspect of this property and the tour. You may already know the artist of the pastel near the hall piano, but I think it might be Odilon Redon. I also think the light fixtures in one room are by Bagues Paris. I would contact them and see if they have any records of the purchase. They have been in business since 1860, and I am sure they would want to know that their work is in such an iconic home. I think this is the exact fixture at Bellosguardo, and the chandelier and two table lamps look like they are part of the same suite. William November 27, 2024

Definitely worth the drive from Palm Springs, a great day trip. The docents are truly a special treasure-trove of knowledge and insight. As a former New Yorker I have followed the story of Huguette Clark for many years. I spend most of my summers in Santa Barbara and for years have been intrigued by her mansion. I was thrilled when a friend forwarded to me the article saying you were finally open to the public. Kudos to your docents! "We all truly enjoyed every minute. I really do not think that even 10% of Santa Barbara County residents have any idea of the unique and stunning beauty found in Bellosguardo's jewel box interior, architectural heritage and gardens. It was an amazing journey into the family's rare lives—it is unlike any museum/home that I have ever entered and our tour guides showered us in a wonderful mixture of the lives lived and the beauty collected, created and inspired. I live part time in Montecito and part time in Montana. It was fun to learn more about the Montana connection. As a teenager I tried to sneak into the property a couple of times and was always caught. I'm glad that I got to see it legally this time. Wonderful place, love the small tour atmosphere where you can have one on one conversations, ask any question, and try to stump the docents. David and Sue were very knowledgeable and charming. My partner and I travel to Europe every summer and as much as we enjoy learning and exploring, doing so alongside hundreds of thousands of others makes the process less enjoyable. Like a lot of people in my tour group, I wanted to see Bellosguardo after reading Empty Mansions. I'm not really sure what I was expecting, but the tour far exceeded it. The craftsmanship and attention to detail were incredible, like nothing I've ever seen before, particularly in the rooms that were transferred from the Clark family's former New York City mansion, which were transferred to NYC from castles in Europe. It's also amazing to see how well-preserved the house and furnishings are, considering Huguette owned it until her death in 2011 but hadn't been there since 1953. She spent a lot of money to maintain it just as her mother had it, and now we all get to enjoy it. My favorite room was Huguette's studio. She was a gifted painter. There were black and white photos of several of her paintings in the book, but you really have to see them in person. What a fabulous hidden gem! I have passed by the driveway 100s of times and had no idea what beauty was to be found behind the gates. The home and gardens have been well maintained. The docents were wonderful and steered our group of 9 through the first floor of this gorgeous mansion. The architectural details of the home are exquisite. The well maintained grounds are inviting. This tour was more than I imagined it would be. The interior of the home is magnificent, and you are able to see so many rooms, and hear the history of this family. The grounds are extensive and beautiful, also. The docents were excellent as guides. I took my friend here for her birthday, and she said it was her best birthday ever. I think she was right. The tour was absolutely amazing! Our docents, Eugene and Eric, were so enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. The group was limited to 10 which was the perfect size and we never felt crowded or unable to hear what information was being shared. I've waited years to do this tour after reading "Empty Mansions." It was on my bucket list, so I travelled from the Island of Bermuda to visit it. I certainly wasn't disappointed. The property is wonderful the guides were superb. My only criticism is that there are no guide books for sale. I really wanted something to bring home and show people. I know I can see it on the internet but that's not the same as having a beautiful book that I can pick up and look at any time. Carol April 30, 2024
We LOVED the tour. The trio of docents brought an interesting variety of voices and styles. The property is majestic and we loved seeing it in the pre-restoration phase. The gardens will be great again since the "bones" are already there. Best view in the area. Looking forward to some musical events. If I lived closer, I'd want to join the docents. I found the tour interesting. It was a little long (one hour and forty-five minutes) without a rest stop or a place to sit. The tour docents were quite informative. I would have liked a handout containing the family trees of the various families that passed through the property. This family tree should contain the birth year and death year of all the members.
